Taylor ENGL 1301 8 December 2016 A Bittersweet Situation The delicious burgers and snacks that people eat on a daily basis are jam packed with unhealthy amounts of sugar, sodium, and trans fats. Most Americans are aware that junk foods are bad for their health, but they continue to eat it anyway. The vicious cycle of the purchasing and consumption of processed foods is perpetuated by the fast paced American lifestyle. Therefore, people are continuously eating foods that are detrimental to their health. Americans should reduce the amount of processed foods that they consume because an excess of processed food negatively affects their health. A large portion of companies in the American food industry are more interested in the profits of food production than the well-being of the consumers. The competitive food market nowadays leads some companies to adopt practices that benefit itself more than the consumers. In modern America, it is convenient for some big companies to produce snack foods that contain little to no nutritional value at an inexpensive price. In order to keep business up and running, it is important to do whatever is necessary which includes leaving out extra expenses. Companies often use entertaining advertisements and attractive food packaging to distract the consumers from this fact. While Americans reap the benefits of quick snacks and meals, they are consistently enjoying foods that are subtly detrimental to their health.
